Problems can be caused by an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, dry skin, intolerance of cold and weight gain. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism are fatigue, increased heart rate (tachycardia), intolerance of heat, sweating, weight loss with increased appetite and insomnia.
